As the priest does not reside nearby, most weekends there are just Readers´ Services, with the Saturday Vespers normally at about 6pm British Isles (and mainland Portugal and Madeiran) time, except when there is a Liturgy. On weekends when there is a liturgy, the Saturday Vespers is generally at about 5pm. On week days when there is a Vespers it is generally at about 7pm. When there is a Reader´s Service on Sunday morning it generally starts at about 10.30am. When there´s a liturgy, because of the long distance the priest has to travel, it generally starts at about 9am. Reception is generally good, though there can be occasional problems. It should be noted that this transmission is not available if Reader James Gross is away for any reason, if there is no one else in the group present with a smartphone to transmit. Generally, Matthew then substitutes for Reader James Gross. But, he is normally only able to do so for the services on Sunday morning. 

 

Please note that Reader James Gross tends to be away in Serbia, most years, from roughly the beginning to the middle of July until the beginning of September, civil calendar, leaving Matthew to cover for this period.

St. Joseph´s has more than one priest serving most weekends and so always has a full Liturgy. It also sometimes has additional services which St. Michael´s does not have. Live services are on Western Pacific  Time and the Livestream will say roughly when they are likely to be streamed live, with the option of receiving a notification. No subtitle option is available when it is being livestreamed, though it is sometimes available on playback after it has been livestreamed, including subtitle options in many languages. Note as well that the original is in English, my native language. I am able to check the Word 2019 automatic translation based Portuguese text to some extent, but have only minimal knowledge of Romanian and so am not able to check that in the same way. I would welcome any input from anyone who can do so. I am happy to do automatic translations into other languages on request.

1. Sermon from Vladimir Moss at St. Michael´s Guildford

 

Please note that there were a number of times in which there was a delay on the line or it was difficult to hear because of a slightly poor connection, as well as when WhatsApp was trying to reconnect. So, these notes might be rougher than usual. Nevertheless I believe they cover the main points. If anyone else is able to provide further information, especially those physically present, then please let me know.

 

The main theme is the loss [and gaining] of the gift of faith. It deals with the subject of miracles. This man had a son who was an epileptic [caused, in this instance, by a spiritual illness, epilepsy being one of its medical, neurological, effects].

The disciples were perplexed as to why they couldn´t cast out this demon.

 

There is the lament of “faithless generation here” [this appears to have been stated after a prompt from the audience]. It also highlights the importance of prayer and fasting. As Christ points out, in response to the questions of the disciples [Matthew 17:20], the disciples had insufficient faith. Some demons will only come out through prayer and fasting. 

 

What is faith? It is like a mustard seed. It seems very small, but its fruits are very great. It can move things. St. Mark the Evangelist talks of getting a mountain to move. But, this generally not very useful.

 

Christ says: “Far greater than I have done, you will do.” He then prophecises two things: “I will be crucified by the Pharisees, then I will rise from the dead.”

 

At this point in Christ´s ministry, Christ´s disciples understood that he was going to die soon. Typically of those with little or no faith, they only believed in the unhappy fact, not the happy one, of his resurrection.

 

It is,[to repeat], characteristic of a lack of faith to believe that bad things will happen, but not good things.

 

Characteristically, we tend to think more about the bad things (such as death). There is also much that we think of which is neither particularly good or bad, but, rather, in the middle.

 

But, as St. Seraphim of Sarov would always remind people, we should rejoice, because Christ has risen. He was always full of joy when greeting people.

 

Every Sunday, such as at Pentecost, we have the reward of faith. Today and every Sunday, especially let us rejoice in the Resurrection. 

 

 

Matthew 17:14-23 (Gospel)

14	And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,
15	Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
16	So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.
17	Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me."
18	And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19	Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"
20	So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21	However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.
22	Now while they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men,
23	and they will kill Him, and the third day He will be raised up. And they were exceedingly sorrowful.

 

2. Sermon at St. Joseph´s of Petrograd

 

Note: unfortunately I could hear echoing throughout this service, the first time this has happened. Nevertheless, it was possible to pick out what was being said with reasonable clarity, most of the time.

 

Merely say the word and I shall be healed. The disciples lack the faith needed to cast out all devils.

If we have no faith, then we can have no prayer and fasting. So, how can we have more faith? So that our actions, including our prayer, will reflect this.

 

We need to pay attention to the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. She keeps on asking for what she needs [and eventually gets it].

 

In the Old Testament, we find someone wrestling with an angel. They did not let go, until the angel showed mercy.

 

“Oh Lord, help me with my unbelief.” Pray, [continuously and] sincerely and the Lord will truly grant us the grace.

Neste ponto do ministério de Cristo, os discípulos de Cristo entenderam que Ele iria morrer em breve. Tipicamente daqueles com pouca ou nenhuma fé, eles só acreditavam no fato infeliz, não no feliz, de sua ressurreição.

 

É, [repita-se], característico da falta de fé acreditar que coisas más vão acontecer, mas não coisas boas.

 

Caracteristicamente, tendemos a pensar mais sobre as coisas ruins (como a morte). Há também muita coisa que pensamos que não é particularmente boa nem má, mas, sim, no meio.

 

Mas, como São Serafim de Sarov sempre lembrava às pessoas, devemos nos alegrar, porque Cristo ressuscitou. Ele estava sempre cheio de alegria ao cumprimentar as pessoas.

 

Todos os domingos, como no Pentecostes, temos a recompensa da fé. Hoje e todos os domingos, de modo especial, alegremo-nos com a ressurreição. 

 

 

Mateus 17:14-23 (Evangelho)

14	E quando chegaram à multidão, um homem veio a Ele, ajoelhando-se para Ele e dizendo:
15	Senhor, tende piedade do meu filho, pois ele é epilético e sofre severamente; porque muitas vezes cai no fogo e muitas vezes na água.

2. Sermão em São José de Petrogrado

 

Nota: infelizmente pude ouvir ecos ao longo deste serviço, a primeira vez que isso aconteceu. No entanto, era possível identificar o que estava a ser dito com razoável clareza, na maioria das vezes.

 

Apenas diga a palavra e eu serei curado. Os discípulos não têm a fé necessária para expulsar todos os demônios.

Se não temos fé, então não podemos ter oração e jejum. Então, como podemos ter mais fé? Para que as nossas ações, incluindo a nossa oração, reflitam isso.

 

Precisamos prestar atenção à parábola da viúva e do juiz injusto. Ela continua a pedir o que precisa [e acaba por conseguir].

 

No Antigo Testamento, encontramos alguém lutando com um anjo. Eles não se soltaram, até que o anjo mostrou misericórdia.

Hristos spune: "Mult mai mare decât am făcut Eu, vei face". Apoi profețește două lucruri: "Voi fi răstignit de farisei, apoi voi învia din morți".

 

În acest moment al lucrării lui Hristos, ucenicii lui Hristos au înțeles că El va muri în curând. De obicei, dintre cei cu puțină sau deloc credință, ei credeau doar în faptul nefericit, nu în cel fericit, al învierii Sale.

 

Este caracteristic lipsei de credință să crezi că se vor întâmpla lucruri rele, dar nu și lucruri bune.

 

În mod caracteristic, avem tendința de a ne gândi mai mult la lucrurile rele (cum ar fi moartea). Există, de asemenea, multe lucruri la care ne gândim care nu sunt nici deosebit de bune, nici rele, ci, mai degrabă, la mijloc.

 

Dar, așa cum le amintea mereu Sfântul Serafim de Sarov, trebuie să ne bucurăm, pentru că Hristos a înviat. Era întotdeauna plin de bucurie când saluta oamenii.

 

În fiecare duminică, ca la Cincizecime, avem răsplata credinței. Astăzi și în fiecare duminică, mai ales să ne bucurăm de Înviere. 

 

 

Matei 17:14-23 (Evanghelia)

14	Când au ajuns la mulțime, un om a venit la El, îngenunchea înaintea Lui și a zis:
15	Doamne, miluiește-l pe fiul meu, căci este epileptic și suferă foarte mult; căci el cade adesea în foc și adesea în apă.
16	L-am adus la ucenicii Tăi, dar ei nu l-au putut vindeca.
17	Atunci Isus a luat cuvântul și a zis: "Neam necredincios și necredincios, până voi fi cu voi? Până când te voi suporta? Aduceți-l aici la Mine."
18	Isus a mustrat demonul și a ieșit din el. și copilul s-a vindecat chiar din acel moment.
19	Atunci ucenicii au venit la Isus în particular și i-au zis: "De ce n-am putut să-l izgonim?"
20	Isus le-a zis: "Din pricina necredinței voastre; căci adevărat vă spun că, dacă veți avea credință ca un grăunte de muștar, veți spune muntelui acestuia: "Mută-te de aici în colo", și se va mișca; și nimic nu va fi imposibil pentru tine.
21	Cu toate acestea, acest fel nu se stinge decât prin rugăciune și post.
22	Pe când stăteau ei în Galileea, Isus le-a zis: "Fiul omului este pe cale să fie vândut în mâinile oamenilor.
23	Îl vor omorî și a treia zi va fi înviat. Și au fost extrem de întristat.

 

2. Predica la Sfântul Iosif din Petrograd

 

Notă: din păcate, am putut auzi ecouri pe tot parcursul acestei slujbe, prima dată când s-a întâmplat acest lucru. Cu toate acestea, a fost posibil să se aleagă ceea ce se spunea cu o claritate rezonabilă, de cele mai multe ori.

 

Spune doar cuvântul și voi fi vindecat. Ucenicilor le lipsește credința necesară pentru a scoate toți diavolii.

Dacă nu avem credință, atunci nu putem avea rugăciune și post. Deci, cum putem avea mai multă credință? Pentru ca acțiunile noastre, inclusiv rugăciunea noastră, să reflecte acest lucru.

 

Trebuie să fim atenți la pilda văduvei și a judecătorului nedrept. Ea continuă să ceară ceea ce are nevoie [și în cele din urmă îl obține].

 

În Vechiul Testament, găsim pe cineva care se luptă cu un înger. Ei nu au dat drumul, până când îngerul nu a arătat milă.

 

"O, Doamne, ajută-mă cu necredința mea." Rugați-vă, [continuu și] sincer și Domnul ne va acorda cu adevărat harul.
