Dear Liz,
Trust you and your hubby and first baby are all well!
Your channel and those of other YouTubers have been extremely useful.
However, there's an important bit of information I haven't come across in any of them!
In many local areas it is possible to study, for free, possibly even with bus fares paid, evening courses sponsored by the Portuguese state, for A1 and A2 and sometimes, for B1 and B2. This is recognised. Requires 90%+ attendance.
These are free for residents of Portugal. They are recognised and YOU DON´T HAVE TO DO THE CIPLE EXAM IF YOU PASS THEM.
Everyone in my A2 class apart from one person managed to attend 90+% of the lessons, held at a secondary school in central Coimbra, two evenings a week from 7.30-10.15pm. One also attended another free course to learn the Latin alphabet (he was from Pakistan and like me had lived a number of years previously in Greece (and we sometimes spoke to each other in Greek). He had narrowly failed the A1 course which preceded this. But, he and everyone else passed the exam, with a lesson to spare and for us to celebrate in!
A minimum of 12 people are required to "open" such courses (under the financing rules). There were two classes at A2 level here in Central Coimbra. It is most annoying that neither the Universities nor YouTubes nor private language teachers tell people about this.
Having said that, I thoroughly recommend your videos and everything else you do, but you must tell them about this! I will be posting a copy of this comment on blogger and sending it to you by email.
| There’s a promise that some people make that makes me a little bit mad, Adrian!
Learn Portuguese in 7 days!
Get fluent in 6 weeks!
Have you seen these ads?
Well, I’m afraid anyone promising you can get fluent in Portuguese in a matter of days or weeks is lying to you. But the good news is - I don’t think fluency is what you should be aiming for!
To communicate effectively and even obtain citizenship in Portugal, you need to get to an A2 level in Portuguese.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion about what it means to reach this level, and how long it takes to get there. So I’m breaking it down for you in today’s video.

Has this reassured you? Let me know in the comments and I’ll see you there!
Beijinhos,
Liz |
